Scoliosis refers to a curvature of the spine

85-90% of all scoliosis is referred to as idiopathic scoliosis, or scoliosis of unknown cause. In 10-15% of the cases the cause of scoliosis is a tumour, infection, a neuromuscular disease such as cerebral palsy, or a birth deformity.

There are many theories as to how idiopathic scoliosis develops. It is interesting to note that scoliosis is more common in thin and active children engaged in sports. The growth of the spine is more rapid during the ages when most kids begin sports; ages 4-6. Most often, scoliosis begins at this age and when left undetected worsens during adolescent years. This knowledge makes many doctors wonder if an injury to the spine left undetected has contributed to the progression of the scoliosis.

New research on scoliosis shows the cause to be a disturbance in the area of the nervous system that controls posture and body balancing. Chiropractors are trained to ensure that the spine is in proper alignment, and not irritating the nerves. An irritated nerve will result in a lack of proper function in the area it controls. Misaligned or “stuck” vertebrae can be caused by any excess stress to the spine, such as being checked in a hockey game, falling off a bike or excess pulling during the birth process.

Regular visits to your chiropractor in order to monitor the progression of scoliosis, are an integral part of living a high quality of life. Chiropractic has been shown to help scoliosis patients alleviate pain and restore normal function. Evidence increasingly tells us that all children should have their spines checked and that every scoliosis sufferer should be under chiropractic care.

If you have any questions about your physical limitations, consult your chiropractor.

"I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working at the same shop...was not. Why? What difference was there in the two persons that caused one to have disease while his partner...escaped? Why?"
